Spring Beckons!

Written by Mr William Teng

Happy Year of the Water Tiger. 立春 (‘Start of Spring’) is the first solar term of the Chinese traditional calendar. This year, Lìchūn starts on 4 February 2022. We will celebrate the start of spring today (and the end of winter) with a bird associated with the sun and light – the rooster.

You might have noticed the increased presence of the Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus) in our neighbourhoods. These wild ‘chickens’ have been sighted all over Singapore. One flock of junglefowl resides within the Punggol Spectra neighbourhood.

Other individuals have been spotted in the vicinity of our school with one making its way into our school compound. Here is a short video of it in action.

I pursued it to take a good photo of it but it ducked into an opening under the fence and strutted over to an HDB block. I guess this answers the question, “Why did the ‘chicken’ cross the road?”

Our Vice-Principal, Mr Daniel Tan, found its galline compatriot gallivanting near the street soccer court. He suspected no fowl play.

Do share your Punggol fauna stories with us so that we can raise awareness of the biodiversity in our neighbourhood.
