Singapore Garden Festival 2018 (I): Beauty of Nature

Written by: Juwini Binte Ramlan, Class 2A2

The Amazing Experience It was such a great privilege to be back at the Gardens by the Bay. What made this visit special is that it is my first time attending the Singapore Garden Festival and exploring the site beyond the popular Flower Dome and Cloud Forest.

As we had to walk quite a distance to reach the main site of the Singapore Garden Festival 2018, I discovered a lot of plants that I had never seen before along the way. One of these includes a species of banana shown in the picture below. Only the genus name Musella was provided so I did not know what species it is.

The Fuschia blossoms also caught my eye with their vivid colours.

It was a sunny and balmy day but that did not deter the visitors - both local and overseas - from viewing the beautiful exhibits. Fortunately, most of the exhibits that we visited were air-conditioned;and it made viewing the gardens a comfortable and leisurely experience.

We started our tour with a long walk to The Meadow. This was the main site of the Singapore Garden Festival 2018 where various themed gardens could be seen in special exhibits.

My favourite exhibits were 'The Secret Garden' and 'The Fantasy Garden'. The latter had gardens that were designed by both local and international landscapers with beautiful perspectives on nature and the flora of their home countries. Many of these gardens had names inspired by nature, and space and time.

'The Secret Garden' was a fairytale-inspired garden where the hidden animal replicas were hidden within beautiful living plants and wax fruits. These rabbits and birds were difficult to spot among the vegetation but they added a cute and whimsical touch to the lovely garden.

I hope that in the future, the people around us do have a heart for nature. We are in the cycle of life and I would like to share a quote from Ms Su (a visitor whom we interviewed at the festival):

'Nature is important to us as it is a whole ecosystem of life. Nature gives us food that we need to survive through life. The plants give us oxygen to breathe and from there is an exchange between carbon dioxide and oxygen. This is why Mother Nature was created (sic) to help us survive.'
